LONG FILE NAME - A standard introduced by Microsoft with Windows 95 that allowed users to break from the file naming conventions of DOS. DOS only allowed filenames of eight letters then a period then three more letters. Almost all other file systems allow for longer names. They can be 255 characters long, containing spaces or even periods.
