my dad has bad phone lines, and can rarely connect above 26k. However, we still noticed that normal "web browsing" (which is highly compressable data) was much faster when we had the serial port (on the router, connected to the modem) set at 115k (the fastest the modem would handle) then when it was set at 56k (what the router was using by default).
